Living the dream

As far as I can see (oh, see here and here for comments from people in my flist, or posts by [info]julietk, to whom apologies for my scepticism), the only reason why any of us here are getting Dreamwidth accounts (myself included) is to cybersquat our favoured usernames just in case it takes off/all our mates migrate to it.

So, two possible fates seem likely for DW:
1. It consists almost entirely of empty accounts, and implodes.
2. We realise we're all on it anyway and actually start using it.

I don't doubt its features are much better than LJ, yada yada, but I still can't see why we'd all be arsed to bother. LJ works fine; who's really desperate for more?

Can I have in invite, to do exactly the same?

They don't seem to have given me any! But I have requested one. Alternatively, you can use your LJ lohin if you use the OpenID login option - they will then add you to the beta invite list, and at some point you'll get an invite like I did, I imagine. (Meanwhile if I get a code sooner, it's yours!)

I don't think there's any great difference in practical terms, although I think it's a good idea to separate 'people whose journal you subscribe to' and 'people who you want to have full access to your journal' into two separately controllable lists, rather than just the single 'friend' category for both which LJ has.

But you can create filters in LJ anyway, can't you? I can't be arsed with that anyway. I can't be bothered to keep separating online identities. Take me as you find me, world!

Ah, I obviously didn't explain that very well. What I meant was that you can add someone on DW to your 'reading list' (friends page) without having to give them access to your friends-only entries, whereas on LJ you can't.

Ah, I see. I'll be on Twitter...

Mm, I haven't been bothered to tout for an invite yet. No doubt I'll be left looking pretty silly when the apocalypse comes.

At the risk of sounding like Monckton of Brenchley, I don't think it's coming. (Well, not this trivial one, anyway!)

I'm interested in Dreamwidth because, unlike LJ, it seems to be under active development. Since LiveJournal is a big old crufty dinosaur of a system, I'm optimistic that, in time, DW should be able to surpass it in user-friendliness and desirable features.

I really cannot tell whether the last part of this comment is sarcastic.

I think he must be quoting their mission statement.

As a bitter old technophobe, I think Dreamwidth-squatting is equivalent to driving your kids around in a 4x4 because you want to protect them from traffic. But I don't expect anybody to listen.
